Barcelona Strengthens Its La Liga Lead with a Narrow Win Over Leganés

Barcelona extended its lead at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 victory over Leganés on Saturday in matchday 31, maintaining an unbeaten streak for the 13th consecutive game in the competition.

The Catalan team secured the win thanks to an own goal by defender Jorge Sáenz early in the second half, taking another step toward claiming the La Liga title.

After a tense first half with chances on both sides, Raphinha delivered a cross toward Robert Lewandowski in the second half, which Sáenz mistakenly deflected into his own net while trying to clear the ball.

Leganés thought they had equalized with a header from Dani Raba, but the referee ruled the goal out for offside.

Barcelona’s points tally rose to 70, putting them 7 points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, who are set to face Alavés on Sunday. Meanwhile, Leganés remains threatened with relegation, sitting 19th with 28 points.

According to official La Liga statistics, this was Barcelona’s eighth consecutive win without conceding a goal — a sign of the clear improvement in the team’s defense under coach Xavi Hernández.

In an interview with Spanish network “Movistar Plus,” Xavi emphasized that the team is not focused on the points gap, but rather on maintaining the players’ mental and physical stability. He stated, “Every match is like a final until the end of the season.”
